Code for Asterisk, originally written by Mark Spencer of Digium, Inc., has been contributed from open source software engineers around the world. Currently boasting over two million users, Asterisk supports a wide range of TDM protocols for the handling and transmission of voice over traditional telephony interfaces, featuring VoIP packet protocols such as SIP and IAX among others. It supports U.S. and European standard signaling types used in business phone systems, allowing it to bridge between next-generation voice-data integrated networks and existing infrastructure.
The MIXpbx and Asterisk
The MIXpbx is a complete communication and telephony solution that uses Asterisk but we added a lot enhancements and features. We define the difference between asterisk and the MIXpbx as follow: Asterisk is a technology whereas the MIXpbx is a solution. The MIXpbx uses Asterisk on order to route voice streams and manage the interconnections with the telecom providers using interfaces like BRI/ISDN, PRI/E1 or analog ports. We added thousands of lines of code to Asterisk and programmed many different plugins and integrations with third party hardware and software in order to make the MIXpbx a complete product that fits the needs of a modern SME.
